先日、クロアチアの人と話をしました。その時に物価の話になったのですが、他の国の物価を図るのって一般的にはリンゴがいくらとかキャベツがいくらとかって言いますよね。ただ、物価の比較にビッグマックの値段が適しているって知っていましたか？
The other day, I talked with a Croat and we discussed the cost of living. Usually, when comparing the cost of living in different countries, we use the price of apples, cabbage, or similar items. However, did you know that the price of a Big Mac is also commonly used to compare the cost of living?
ビッグマック指数というものがあります。世界中でビッグマックは売っているので、ビッグマックの値段は各国の物価を図るのに適しているらしいです。野菜や果物だと国によって生産量や輸入量なども変わってきますからね。
There is something called the “Big Mac Index.” Since Big Macs are sold worldwide, their price is considered suitable for comparing the cost of living in different countries. The production and import volume of fruits and vegetables differ in each country, so using them to compare costs can be challenging.
その人とは、私は日本のビッグマックが3.5ドル（350円）くらいだと話したら驚いていました。クロアチアは2.4ドル（240円）くらいだそうです。きっと、大きさもクロアチアの方が大きいでしょうね。ちなみに、私が以前住んでいたタイなどアジアの国ではマクドナルドやケンタッキーでお米のメニューを置いています。
When I told her that the price of a Big Mac in Japan was about 3.5 dollars (350 yen), she was surprised. It’s about 2.4 dollars (240 yen) in Croatia, and it’s probably bigger there. By the way, I previously lived in Thailand, where MacDonald’s and KFC offer rice dishes on their menus.
次に、そのクロアチア人が負けず嫌いを出してきてタバコはいくらかを聞いてきましたので、440円くらいと答えたら、クロアチアでは800円以上だと言っていました。税金が高いんですねと聞いたら、タバコ税は凄く高いという事でした。ちなみに、オーストラリアでもタバコはそれくらいだったと思います。
Next, the Croat tried to one-up me and asked how much cigarettes cost in Japan. When I answered that it’s about 440 yen, she said it’s over 800 yen in Croatia. I asked if the tax was high, and she said yes, the tobacco tax is incredibly high. By the way, I think cigarettes cost about the same in Australia.
私はとっくの昔にタバコをやめているので吸いませんが、オーストラリアに住んでいた時にインド人の知人がタバコが物凄く高いと言っていました。その為に、巻きタバコをすっていました。自分で紙にタバコを葉っぱを巻いて作るタイプのものです。
I quit smoking a long time ago, so I don’t smoke anymore. However, when I was living in Australia, my Indian friend told me that cigarettes were too expensive there, so he smoked rolled cigarettes.
ちなみに、彼はタバコ以外に他のものも吸っていたようですね。。。内緒です。国によってはマリファナなどは違法でない所もあるみたいですね。私は絶対にそういう物は使いませんし、興味もないですけが。
He seemed to smoke other things too, but that’s a secret. Some countries allow the use of marijuana, but I would never use it, and I’m not interested in it.
