First, take a look at the photo below. It may look like lip balm, but it’s not. It’s called Yadom and it’s very famous in Thailand – everyone uses it.

It contains menthol and when you put the stick in your nostril, it gives you a refreshing feeling and wakes you up. Many Thai people use it, and there are stick and cream versions.

I’ve only used the stick version, and while Japanese people don’t usually put things in their noses in public, it’s common for women to do so in Thailand. I remember laughing when I saw a woman at my office with sticks in both nostrils while working.

Ya means “medicine” in Thai, and “dom” means “inhale.” I ordered it from Thailand because I’ve been feeling very sleepy lately and wanted something to wake me up.

It’s not expensive – in Thailand, one stick costs about 25 baht (75 yen). I bought six with shipping for 1000 yen, which I think is a good deal in Japan. It’s good to use at home, and my mother, who has hay fever, said it’s helpful during peak pollen season. Even though it may not be popular in Japan, it’s still a great product to have around!
