私は台湾にいたときに、日本語教師として働いています。日本語を習いにきている生徒さんは、中には本当にゼロからスタートの人もいます。その生徒さん相手に日本語を分かってもらうのは本当に難しいです。

When I lived in Taiwan, I worked as a Japanese teacher. Some of the students came to learn Japanese from scratch. It was really difficult to make them understand Japanese.

今までに習ったことのない言葉は理解してくれません。そして、「て、に、を、は」などどの場面で使うかを把握してもらう為に説明するのは本当に難しいと思います。

They couldn’t understand words that they had never learned before. It was also very difficult to explain when and in what situation Japanese particles such as “te”, “ni”, “wo”, and “ha” are used.

私は過去の職場では、敢えて難しい言い回しを練習していた事があります。自分が使いたい難しい言葉を拾ってノートにして、それを練習していました。その為に、簡単な言葉を使うと逆に練習してきた物をなくしてしまうようで、少しだけ心の葛藤がありました。

In my previous job, I deliberately practiced using difficult expressions. I wrote down the difficult words I wanted to use in a notebook and practiced using them. Therefore, when I used easy words, I felt like I was losing what I had practiced, so there was a slight conflict in my mind.

きっと、海外に住んでいた日本人が英語を英語のままの発音で、日本語英語の発音に戻さないのと似ていると思います。←ちょっとわかりづらいですね。

I think it’s similar to Japanese people living abroad who try not to revert to Japanese English and maintain their English pronunciation, even if it differs from the standard Japanese pronunciation.

私の場合は特にでしたが、日本人が海外にいくと発音の違いにぶつかり、頑張って英語圏で通用するような発音に修正します。せっかく、修正したものを日本語英語に直す事に違和感を感じるのと、既に口に馴染んでしまっているので日本語英語の発音に直さないようになります。

Although this was especially true for me, when Japanese people go abroad, they often have to adjust their pronunciation to be understood in English-speaking countries. However, they may feel uncomfortable changing their pronunciation to Japanese English, as they have become accustomed to their new way of speaking.

ただ、日本語教師としては、簡単な日本語を使わないと相手に理解してもらえませんし、そうでないと仕事も成り立ちません。ですので、頑張って修正が必要でした。

As a Japanese language teacher, using simple Japanese is necessary to ensure that students understand, and to be able to do my job. So I had to work hard to adjust my language.

私が以前に英語を教えていた時にも、小学生でも理解出来るような説明を会社の心掛けの一つにしていました。これはアップル創業者のスティーブジョブスが言っていた言葉の引用なのですが、ジョブスは製品の説明書は小学生でも分かる内容で書くようにと社内で徹底していたようです。

When I used to teach English, I made it a point to explain things in a way that even elementary school students could understand. This is a quote from Apple founder Steve Jobs, who emphasized that product instructions should be written in language that even elementary school students can understand.

また、色々な業界で言われますが、業界用語を使う奴ほど頭が悪かったり、難しい言葉で説明するほど頭が悪いと言われます。これは難しい内容を簡単な事に要約する能力がないと見なされる為です。本当にそう思います。

In many industries, it is said that the people who use industry-specific terms or difficult words are not intelligent. This is because they are considered to lack the ability to summarize difficult content into simple terms. I really think this is true.

また、現在多くの会社では、物事を表現するのに一言や簡単な言葉で表現するような訓練が行なわれていたりします。特にマーケティングの業界ではいかにお客様に分かるように、心に響くような言葉を使うかの訓練が行なわれます。これは意外と難しいです。私も簡単な言葉で説明するのが苦手です。能力不足です。

In many companies, there is training to express things in one word or a simple phrase. Especially in the marketing industry, training is conducted on how to use words that resonate with customers and are easy for them to understand. This is surprisingly difficult. I myself am not good at explaining things in simple words. I lack the ability to do so.

話が全くそれましたが、日本語教師は相手の心に響く言葉を選ぶ必要はありませんが、なるべく分かり易い言葉を選択する能力が必要だと思います。

This is a bit of a tangent, but I believe that Japanese teachers need the ability to choose words that are easy to understand, even if they don’t necessarily need to choose emotionally resonant words.
