About Lǚ Méng

When I lived in Taiwan, I had an opportunity to discuss Chinese history. I had previously read the book “Three Kingdoms.” It may seem unrelated to Taiwan, but please overlook that.

To be honest, I don’t remember the details of “Three Kingdoms” very well. The famous characters in “Three Kingdoms” are Zhuge Liang Komei and Liu Bei Gentoku. I particularly like strategists like Zhuge Liang. I have always found strategists fascinating since I was a child. Although not well-known, there is a character named Lǚ Méng in “Three Kingdoms.”

I don’t remember the details of “Three Kingdoms” very clearly, but I have some vague memories of his story. It seems that when he was young, Lǚ Méng was physically strong but lacked interest in studying.

However, Sun Quan, the ruler of Wu, told Lǚ Méng that the upcoming wars would require intellectual prowess as well. Upon hearing this, Lǚ Méng desperately began reading books and became a knowledgeable person, surpassing even scholars. One famous quote attributed to him is “After parting ways with a gentleman for three days, you should look at him with fresh eyes when you meet again.”

This means that a person who is a gentleman can grow and change significantly in just three days, so when you meet them again, you should look at them with a new perspective. I also believe that humans can grow rapidly through effort and hard work. Furthermore, I always strive to approach people and things with a clean slate, without preconceived notions.

While I don’t remember much about the contents of “Three Kingdoms,” Lǚ Méng’s story left a strong impression on me and stayed in my mind. As someone who didn’t study much as a child, I want to study and make efforts every day to come closer to someone like him. Today, I wrote down these recollections that came to mind.
